School Council

The school council at Shaw Ridge is now in its fifth year of office and, following elections in October 2004, we now have new council members which represent all key stages throughout the school. The council create their agendas from issues which arise within the school , mainly from the children and, on occasions, from the staff or parents . All agenda items are then discussed, via representatives, with class members through circle times, and ideas are put forward for discussion at the next council meeting.
The school council have achieved a number of successful initiatives since its formation in 2001.
Some of these include : the organisation of water bottles for every child in order for them to drink at regular intervals during the day thus increasing their brain activity.
Another idea which was introduced was the organisation of a playground box , of equipment which is added to and upgraded at regular intervals. This has encouraged co-operative play between the children.
The school council were consulted in a recent review of the school marking policy and have made a valuable contribution. A new venture for 2004 was the election a health and safety representative from the school council, which has helped to extend all the children's awareness of health and safety issues throughout the school.
Since it's formation, the school council has been instrumental in shaping the grounds development project within the school. Thanks to their input, we now have a Quiet Area in the playground and are gradually transforming our Pond Area into an outside classroom. Many councillors and their families have attended working parties and were happy to get their hands dirty!
